In 1989, Don Malecha had a dream, a dream of owning his own company. After heavy convincing from my wife Mary, we purchased a used dump truck and in Lonsdale, MN Don's Trucking was born. After a quick reality check, and a few "I told you so's" from Mary, I realized it was going to take more than just a simple thought to make this company grow. After a lot of head scratching and pencil pushing, we bought another truck in 1990 and it only grew larger from there. Being the people person that I am, I wanted to do something with the public. In 1991, we purchased a front end tractor and started to sell rock and sand from our yard for residential customers. Things were going well and in 1994, we purchased our first skid loader which allowed us to start doing misc. excavating jobs.
Our oldest son, Kevin, started showing interest in the business at a young age. He worked by my side doing whatever he could. In 2002, after completing a 3-year term in the Army, he attended Hennepin Technical College studying landscape design and construction. During this time, he worked with the company part-time. After graduating, he joined the company full-time. Kevin is now managing Affordable Landscapes by Don's Trucking, which is the landscape branch of the company.
Today, Don's Trucking employs 9 employees, which includes our second son, Eric, who works part-time throughout high school and plans to join the company full-time after graduating. Don's Trucking and Affordable Landscapes now provides a variety of services including: trucking, excavating, large and small residential/commercial landscape projects, and lawn mowing/maintenance. We also sell a wide variety of landscape products for the do-it-yourself homeowners.
